Why Full-Grain Leather Belongs on Your Desk (and How It Ages)

Most desk accessories are plastic pretending to be something else. Full-grain leather is the opposite: it's the top layer of the hide, scars and grain intact, and it's the only kind that gets better the longer you use it.

What "full-grain" actually means

Leather is sold in layers. "Genuine leather" is the cheapest usable layer; full-grain is the strongest one, with the natural surface left untouched. It develops a patina — a soft shine and deepening color — from nothing but your hands and time.

Where it earns its place

On a desk, leather goes exactly where your hands go: a desk pad under the keyboard, a mouse pad under your palm, a valet tray for the end-of-day pocket dump, coasters under every mug. Five years from now the plastic version is in a landfill; the leather version looks better than the day it arrived.
